Nezih Ünen: A Music Designer
Nezih Ünen's pages on digital platforms:
Nezih Ünen began his musical journey by learning the flute and saxophone, but later shifted his focus toward composition. His passion for intercultural synthesis manifested as early as his debut album Planet and his first television score, Yarın Artık Bugündür; it reached its pinnacle with his cult jingle for Süper FM and the globally acclaimed Lost Songs of Anatolia project.
Beyond composing songs, film scores, commercials, and audio branding, Ünen’s unconventional and pioneering work has often led to him being described as a "music designer."
However, these productions must be evaluated within the context of their time: while similar cross-genre blends have become commonplace today, his track "Karnaval" caused a major sensation when it was released back in 1998. The ethnic hip-hop fusion in the Süper FM jingle was crafted in 1993, long before this movement gained global mainstream traction. Similarly, the modern arrangements built around the raw, authentic performances of local people in Lost Songs of Anatolia began taking shape in the early 2000s, long before similar concepts became widespread on social media.
Due to the sheer diversity of his work, some followers know Nezih Ünen as a pop artist through his iconic 1990s hit "Çingene Yüreğim," while others recognize him for introducing a traditional folk song like "Eşrefoğlu Al Haberi"—which garnered tens of millions of views—to the modern world. For many, he remains the creator of an era’s most unforgettable audio signatures.
Below, you can explore selected examples from this multi-layered musical journey.
